Frequently Asked Questions
Getting started
General questions about MIXAP
What is MIXAP and who is it for?
MIXAP is a free, open-source web app that lets teachers create Mixed Reality (MR) learning activities using printed images and digital overlays. It’s designed for educators in all subjects and grade levels—no technical skills needed.
Do I need to download anything to use MIXAP?
No! MIXAP works entirely in your browser. You can create, preview, and share activities on any device—no downloads or installations required.
Is MIXAP free to use?
Yes. MIXAP is completely free and open-source, funded by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union.
Can I use MIXAP on my phone or tablet?
Yes! You can use MIXAP on phones, tablets, laptops, or desktops. You simply need a web browser and a camera.
How do I create my first MR activity?
Just upload an image (like a worksheet), add interactive content (e.g., videos, quizzes), and print it. When students scan the image, it comes to life with your added content!
Do I need to be tech-savvy to use MIXAP?
Not at all. MIXAP is designed for teachers, with a simple interface and step-by-step guidance. If you can upload an image and click a few buttons, you can use MIXAP.
Using the Tool
Questions about using MIXAP
What types of activities can I create with MIXAP?
You can create five types of MR activities: augmented activity, search and find, pair association, information layers and ask the AI (still in beta-testing).
How does image augmentation work?
You print an image, then use MIXAP to “link” digital content (like a video or audio) to it. When a student scans the image, the digital content appears on top of the physical page.
Can I add quizzes or questions to my activity?
Not directly, even though we are working on this option for the ask the AI activity. You can always create you quizzes on another tools and add a link in MIXAP towards it.
How do students access the MR content?
Each activity generates a QR code, a link and a code. Depending on your situation, you can use either one. Students can scan the QR code, click on the link or enter the code to download and launch the experience—no login or app download required.
Can I preview my activity before using it in class?
Absolutely. You can test your activity using a live preview inside the app and adjust it before printing.
What file formats does MIXAP support?
You can upload several types of formats :
- Image : .png, .jpeg, .jpg, .gif (after we apply the fix).
- Video : .mp4, .webm, .ogg
- Audio : .m4a, .mpeg, .mp3, .ogg, .wav, .webm
- 3D : .gltf, .obj, .glb
The maximum file size limit is 5mb.
Why aren’t my activities working?
MIXAP requires permissions of your browser to access the camera – make sure these are granted. If the problem persists, please send us a screenshot of the preview view.
Classroom integration

Pioneer Teacher Program
Questions about Pioneer Teachers
What is a MIXAP Pioneer Teacher?
Pioneer Teachers are early adopters helping shape the tool by testing it, giving feedback, and sharing best practices. We work with 30 pioneer teachers in three countries https://mixap-lium.univ-lemans.fr/team/
How can I join the Pioneer Teacher program?
You can join by participating in a local or online MIXAP workshop, or by contacting the project team directly via the website.
What are the benefits of becoming a Pioneer Teacher?
You’ll get access to early features, badges and certificates, networking with international educators, and opportunities to co-design the future of MR in education.
Will I receive a certificate or badge?
Yes. All active Pioneer Teachers receive digital badges and certificates for their participation and contributions.
Technical & Privacy
Questions about technical matters
Is MIXAP secure and GDPR-compliant?
Yes. MIXAP is built with user privacy in mind and follows GDPR guidelines. No personal student data is collected.
The AI features integrated into MIXAP are also GDPR compliant. We use Albert (openai-oss-120b) for text generation, Mistral Built-in tool for image generation and pixtral-large-2411 for Ask the AI.
What happens to my uploaded content?
Your activities and content are stored securely and can be deleted at any time. You control what you share. Just beware that once you share your activity, the code for this activity might be shared again by others.
Can I share my activities with other teachers?
Yes. You can share your QR codes, in “template mode” with colleagues so they can modify the activity for their classroom. You can even share your activities with the entire community by putting them in the education resource catalogue https://mixap-lium.univ-lemans.fr/educational-resources/ . Troubleshooting
Bugs & known issues
Does MIXAP work on ipads, iphones and other Apple products?
Mixap is currently developed exclusively for the Chrome browser and tested on Samsung tablets and desktops. Apple products may not function with their native Safari browser. Please test your activities on your student’s ipads using chrome before the use in classrooms to ensure the activities work as intended.
Should I install the app when chrome offers to do so?
The app version of Mixap is currently unsupported. We recommend the direct use of MIXAP directly within chrome.
When testing my activity, I only see a blank canvas and the camera image can’t be seen. I already gave permissions to MIXAP to use the camera. What’s going on?
This is a known issue. Just refresh the page in Chrome, the activity should work as intended.
The “Pair Association” Activity has a hard time detecting my images. What can I do?
We provide a set of frames that you can add to your markers. This significantly should improve detection time for the pair association activity.
I noticed that the “Search and Find” & “Pair Association” activities sometimes detect the wrong image. What can be done to avoid this?
MIXAP’s augmented reality algorithm is designed to augment markers, distinguishing different ones can sometimes be an issue, especially with text. To improve chances all markers are different, add frames to your markers.
Since the new version of MIXAP, I lost all my work and I cannot synchronize my activities anymore. What to do?
Chrome might have kept an old version of MIXAP on your device. To ensure you are using the most recent version, go to “Settings” (available in the menu under the button consisting of three vertical points in the upper right of your Chrome Browser). Search for “Site Settings” in the search bar. Click on the small triangle on the line of “mixap.univ-lemans.fr” then click the “Delete data” button.
